I am interested in and conduct interdisciplinary research.

Biography

I am a clinical psychiatrist specializing in the research and care of people with mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder. My research examines clinical and neurobiological factors in seasonal, treatment-resistant and workplace depression, biological and therapeutic effects of light, clinical trials, biomarkers, clinical guidelines, digital health technology, and global mental health.

My clinical trials involve the spectrum of depression treatments from pharmacologic (antidepressant medications, mood stabilizers) to non-pharmacologic (light therapy, telephone-administered cognitive behaviour therapy) to neuromodulatory (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation for treatment refractory depression), and are funded by agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and by industry sponsors.

I am also actively involved in evidence-based medicine as an editorial advisor for the Cochrane Collaboration and in knowledge translation through development and dissemination of clinical practice guidelines, including the internationally-used and widely-cited CANMAT guidelines for depression and bipolar disorder.

I have authored or co-authored over 570 scientific articles, including more than 450 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 11 books on depression. I am on the editorial boards of 4 international journals and serve as Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.
