Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

My academic pursuits have been defined by a desire to understand the role of social norms; illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and food climate biodiversity scenarios in gendered interactions with marine resources. I aim to explore their potential to improve food and livelihood security in small-scale fishing communities. This inquisitiveness inspired me to envision a trajectory where multidisciplinary research could thrive, unrestricted by traditional boundaries that often constrain scholarly and innovative research. My doctoral research focuses on the vulnerabilities and resilience of fishing communities, highlighting global issues faced by coastal states. It combines knowledge from natural and social sciences to analyze human-ecological interactions, IUU fishing, and climate change vulnerabilities, both globally and within rural African communities. By combining scholarly precision with gender-sensitive socio-scientific methodologies, I aim to develop an intellectually rigorous and dynamic academic approach that adapts to diverse vulnerabilities. Pursuing graduate studies was a logical progression in my dedication to enhancing a comprehensive understanding of social science methodologies as an effective means of investigation. This approach reflects my conviction that multidisciplinary approaches can challenge established scientific norms and offer novel insights. These new perspectives will contribute to global discussions on adapting to climate change, combating illegal fishing and supporting small-scale fisheries, with a particular emphasis on gender-related aspects.

What aspect of your graduate program do you enjoy the most or are looking forward to with the greatest curiosity?

My doctoral field research on the vulnerability and resilience of fisherfolk to climate change, IUU fishing and gender roles in Cameroon and Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa, has been engaging. I am passionate about advocating for vulnerable fisherfolk and Indigenous people in fisheries through my research, having witnessed their challenges and limited livelihood opportunities. This doctoral work has allowed me to effectively combine my background in fisheries sciences with social sciences, adopting an interdisciplinary approach. The integration of diverse scholarly and multidimensional social science perspectives has broadened my investigative processes. This interdisciplinary approach facilitates a more comprehensive and nuanced examination of social vulnerabilities among different genders in small-scale fishing communities globally, contributing significantly to various academic disciplines.

What do you see as your biggest challenge(s) in your future career?

Looking ahead in my career focused on interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary social science and gender-based small-scale fisheries research, I anticipate facing obstacles due to my approach. Some projects in small-scale fisheries are rigorously science-based, often lacking gender dimensions and social science methodologies. While my innovative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach offers significant opportunities for advancing knowledge and insight, acceptance within conventional academic structures may require extra effort. Proponents of interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and gender-based social science research must consistently demonstrate the legitimacy and merit of these approaches as rigorous scholarly endeavours.
