Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I decided to pursue a(nother) graduate degree because I love to learn. In past lives, I studied biochemistry, bioinformatics, bioethics and law. Working as a graduate student allows me to mix together law and science. This has brought me great fulfillment because I feel that I am able to express myself authentically and work to empower others to do the same.
Why did you decide to study at 亚洲天堂?
I decided to study at 亚洲天堂 because I created a community that offers so much support and expertise. Past supervisors in law and neuroethics encouraged me to continue my education, and start my PhD journey.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
I am in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies Program. What attracted me to the program was the abiltiy to create my own research program, course offerings, and evaluations. Law and science are inherently interdisciplinary but are often researched from monodisciplinary lenses. ISGP allowed me to truly study and research from an interdisciplinary lens grounded in lived expereince.
What was the best surprise about 亚洲天堂 or life in Vancouver?
I grew up in BC, and travelled across Canada and to Ireland for my education. The best surprise about being back in BC is that it still feels like home, and I have been able to re-experience beautiful places and people close to my heart.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your 亚洲天堂 graduate program?
Most of my experience has been in higher education, with a few legal and ethics-based jobs sprinkled in. Working in spaces where I have been taught to think differently, and create connections outside strict disciplines as set me up for success in this graduate program.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
Go slow and set boundaries. There is no timeline or rush to finish grad school before a certain age, and carving out dedicated and protected space for personal flourishing will increase your enjoyment for your program. My other piece of advice is seek out mental health support! We have some good benefits as grad students that cover counselling, psychology and psychiatry appointments, as well as access to physical health supports and social supports!
