Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies congratulates the most recent recipients of the 2018 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Doctoral Scholarship, Mohammad Karamouzian and Grace Nosek. Since the scholarship program鈥檚 inception, Mohammad and Grace are the 24th and 25th PhD students nominated by the University of British Columbia.
Mohammad Karamouzian (population and public health, Faculty of Medicine)
Mohammad Karamouzian鈥檚 passion for global equity in health and social justice grew from concerns for the homeless drug users he worked with as a volunteer at an NGO food bank in Iran. An HIV/AIDS epidemiologist, Mohammad works with world-renowned researchers to affect positive change in current harm reduction policies.
One of Mohammad鈥檚 supervisors, Professor Thomas Kerr, says that 鈥淢ohammad is a truly outstanding researcher who despite still being a doctoral student has made a real difference, in both Canada and Iran. Mohammad cares deeply about protecting the health of vulnerable populations and will undoubtedly continue to make important contributions through his work. He is most deserving of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship.鈥
Grace Nosek (law, Peter A. Allard School of Law)
Grace Nosek is interested in how law can be used to protect climate change science, particularly in an environment of doubt created by companies focused on protecting profit. She is also the author of a series of young adult eco-fantasy books, the Ava of the Gaia Series, that incorporates important issues like climate change into compelling storytelling.
Grace鈥檚 supervisor, Professor Joel Bakan, says that 鈥淕race is a deeply original thinker with a razor-sharp mind and a wonderfully gifted scholar who is an absolute joy to work with. But what makes Grace truly remarkable is her passionate commitment and leadership, in both academic and activist contexts (the latter including novels, podcasts, and the 亚洲天堂 Climate Hub initiative, among others), in relation to averting the imminent and existential crisis of climate change.鈥
About the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Doctoral Scholarship
Each year, up to 15 scholarships are awarded by to support doctoral students pursuing research in one or more of the four themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada in the World and People, and their Natural Environment.
