Ism谩lia De Sousa, a PhD candidate in Nursing and member of the Public Scholars Initiative, has received a 2023 Personnel Award for Black Scholars from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).
Brain Canada, the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health, and Heart & Stroke launched the inaugural Personnel Awards for Black Scholars to recognize Black trainees in heart and/or brain research across Canada.
Ism谩lia was recognized for her work in stroke care. She will be investigating the experiences of young women diagnosed with a stroke, with a specific focus on how their living conditions, economic circumstances, social and environmental challenges, and other social determinants of health impact their access to stroke care.
The award will allow Ism谩lia to focus on developing the specialized knowledge and skills needed to create clinical impact and address inequities in stroke care. Ism谩lia was one of 12 master鈥檚 students and 7 doctoral students across Canada to receive the award.
